New Year’s Resolutions

Not everyone makes a new year’s resolution, but I’m guessing that at some point in your life you’ve made one. If you can remember your historic resolutions were they about you? Most of us set ourselves targets to reach or changes that we would like to make.

Resolutions are often YANG in their nature. Sometimes we need these changes, but starting them on the 1st of January can be harsh. Maybe for 2023, start your year with something a little more YIN. Find some balance in your new year, honour your Yin and your Yang energies in life.

Yang is about change, movement, striving and achieving great expectations.

Yin is about acceptance, stillness, enjoying the present moment and by making small changes on a daily basis.

There is such huge pressure through social media and society to change, improve, progress and strive for more. Just for a moment pause and look at what we are bombarded with on a daily basis – the ideal life/home/car/body image. It’s easy to believe the hype and keep pushing forward for the ‘ideal’.

Does this Yang approach work for you? Are you being true to yourself? Is there another way?

This could be why so many New Year’s resolutions are not fulfilled, year after year.

Maybe for 2023 you try a more Yin approach. Something you don’t want to change. Something that you allow to ‘be’, just as it is right now.

It’s not easy, for many this is out of our comfort zone. But maybe you can try one of the following:

“I accept my body as it is right now”

“I will allow my anger/depression/fear to manifest without judgement”

“I resolve to let … (you fill in the blank) … to just be as it is right now”

If you’ve given up something in the past that has resulted in you loosing joy, have you really gained anything? If we are unhappy this can spread in the way we talk to people and treat loved ones. Decide if your past resolutions have made a positive impact on your year, your life and then plan your year ahead.

Remember every decision and action has a consequence to it.

Choose your resolutions wisely.

Maybe choose a Yang and a Yin resolution for 2023.

Be kind to yourself.

Maybe 2023 is your year of Yin.
